With my critics towards CoD/BF DLC I dont mean that they should make it free, but do it in a way that it doesnt split the player base. Also, lower the price of it, if its not that expensive, many people might buy it and you could even get more revenue than by making it expensive
Then the game had an expansion: Rising Storm. If you owned RO2, you can/could play Rising Storm for free, but with the limitation that you can only play as a Rifleman. Rising Storm also has a premium version, in which if you pay you are allowed to use some extra weapons (for example the M97 Trenchgun) like in RO2
I think that the best aproach is the one that Red Orchestra 2 devs did. The original game has a DLC which gives you the option to use extra weapons (but you can play against people without DLC using them, they are properly balanced btw)
Also, another thing that kills the game a lot: DLCs in the way they are done. WaW had free official mappacks, so there wasnt any split in the player base, anybody could play them. Since MW2, like 90% of DLC was "premium" and by playing it, you could only play against the people who have it, which splits the community and usually the non-DLC playlists had many more players than the one with DLC (making the DLC a waste of money)
If not, their fan base will become smaller and smaller over time and BF will eat their cake (if it hasnt happened already). BF allows some other sorts of gameplays at least
Going back to WW2 with the same ideas as latest titles will definitely fail, it could actually be the shittiest ww2 game ever. And only SMGs would outmatch any other weapon of the era: MGs, Bolt action rifles, semiauto rifles...
Most of the "good" spots were crap by comparing them to the ones I could use in previous titles. Also, MW3 DLCs deepened the problem I am talking about, maps began becoming smaller, more colorful and with less posibilities of gameplay
In MW3, the latest title I played, I had a lot of problems to find strong defendable positions. Which are usually places close to map borders, with 2 levels or more, a good view and 1-2 entrances at max
The map is full of places to hide, houses to camp, destroyed buildings/walls/sandbags to take cover, also high spots which are good to defend and from where you can easily control the map without being a target from all angles
