You get more stars if you make more posts. They are absolutely useless, just like an achievement. If you are ItsModder (blue) you can get 5 stars maximum. If you are grey - I do not know the maximum (8 probably? I don't get any more after getting the eighth).
Funfact about stars:
If you make 1337 posts you will have 20 stars, that will actually disappear as soon as you make post number 1338
