With XNA this isn't even too much work.

Let him do his work. I learnt game development with just the DirectX 6 SDK and I made proper 3D games with it (that didn't even look shitty back then because it looked the same as HL1 which was 1-2 years old) (yes, I'm an oldfag computer engineer)
