@g-man explained it once to us. It means whether they are positive(happy) or negative (angry).

) is is happy
( is is angry

I explained it fucking 1337 times. Now, specially for you. In my examples I will use 'example)' as a message. So 'example' is any word and ')' is actually a shortened smiley like :-) but shortened so it looks just like ')'. Same about '(', it is negative/sad/upset smiley. If there are many smileys like 'example)))))' it means big emotion, so 'example)' is just a smile and 'example)))))))' means happiness. TADA, Russians in a nutshell.
