That changed in 1.7.1. But it was bugged in 1.7.1.1, and is now supposedly fixed in 1.7.1.2.

Yes, but it does not work. I tried it, picked female and I spawned as a male (actually I was already spawned when I was able to chose this).
Going to check on my other CD key in a few hours if I can be a female there.

1.7.1.2 servers were crashing every 5min. 1.7.1.3 was released but had shit fps. 1.7.1.4 seems good. My fps is back to ~40 again, nice.
Also: I am a fugly female.
The best thing just happened to me: Connect with 1.7.1.4 to a 1.7.1.1 server: There won't be any zombies and nobody can see you (you can't see them either) but you can pick up everything you find and keep it.
Also animals don't see me and I don't make any noise
Every time you respawn on 1.7.1.3+ you can chose your gender. I've been male and female.
