Why? Phones are made by tech companies and only sometimes (I only know of Vodafone (old phones) and T-Mobile (first Google phone)) providers actually have to do anything with that phone.
Because I know service hacks.
Example:
Using Sprints PM (Picture Mail) service after service disconnection
and receiving those messages to and from your stock sms/mms client.
I know others as well, like the Cricket WAP hacks that give 3g without service
using CDMA workshop.
